How a food court works in Bangkok
In most food courts you do not pay at the stall in cash. The principle:
- Go to the cash desk at the entrance and top up a prepaid card, from about 100 baht;
- Choose a stall, order and present the card: the amount is debited;
- Sit down: the dish is brought to you, or you collect it when your number is called;
- When leaving, go back to the cash desk to get the unused credit refunded. Do not lose the card.
Some halls use tickets or payment at the stall instead: watch what the customers in front of you do. In every case, keep some cash: small notes of 20, 50 and 100 baht are the most useful, as our guide to money, payment and tipping in Bangkok explains.
The most convenient addresses
Pier 21, Terminal 21 (Asok)
On the 5th floor of the Terminal 21 shopping centre, at the exit of BTS Asok, the Pier 21 food court is the best known of the food courts among travellers: a ferry-terminal decor, a clean hall, many stalls. Dishes start at around 30 baht and are most often between 30 and 80 baht; the card is topped up from 100 baht and the unspent balance is refunded. It is open every day from 10am to 10pm. Ideal for lunch during a visit to Sukhumvit: our Sukhumvit guide covers the rest of the area.
Food Island, MBK Center (National Stadium)
On the 6th floor of the MBK centre, linked by walkway to BTS National Stadium, Food Island gathers more than twenty stalls of noodles, rice, papaya salad, desserts and vegetarian dishes, with a prepaid card. Expect 50 to 80 baht for a pad thai or a rice dish, sometimes up to 120. The centre is open from 10am to 10pm. Handy after a morning of shopping or of visiting the nearby Jim Thompson House and the BACC. Beware: other floors also have pricier restaurants, so check the prices before sitting down.
Siam Paragon and the Siam centres
At Siam Paragon, the dining offer, on the ground floor, is smarter: a fine-food market, gourmet counters, chain restaurants and takeaway. Prices are generally higher than in the popular food courts: look at the menus before ordering. It is a fallback choice when it rains or with the family, after the SEA LIFE aquarium. The other Siam centres have food courts on the top floor; our guide to Siam and Pathumwan locates them.
Pratunam, ICONSIAM and the others
In Pratunam, the fashion centres such as Platinum also have food courts for shoppers; see the page on Pratunam and Platinum Fashion Mall. On the west bank of the river, ICONSIAM combines an indoor market, SookSiam, and restaurants: it is more a place for discovery than a budget meal.

What to eat: a few dishes to look for
- Pad thai, fried rice, chicken rice (khao man gai): the safest dishes for a first meal.
- Noodle soups: a bowl of noodle soup often costs less than 60 baht.
- Green papaya salad (som tam): say "mai phet" to order it mild.
- Desserts: mango and sticky rice in season. Our guide to Thai desserts lists them.
Chilli is the main trap: if you cannot take it, say so beforehand. For other meals, the street is still better: see our guide to street food in Bangkok.
Practical tips
- Avoid 12pm-1pm: it is the office workers' rush hour. Come at 11am or after 1:30pm.
- Keep the card and the receipt until refunded.
- Water is sold at the stall; tap water is not for drinking. See emergencies and health in Bangkok.
- The air conditioning is strong: bring a light layer.
- The toilets of the centres are free and clean, often near the food court.
- On a tight budget, a meal in a food court costs far less than in a restaurant; our guide to the budget in Bangkok gives totals.
