White Orchid, free-flow beer

The most booked choice: buffet, unlimited beer and classical Thai dance for about $33 to $34. According to this boat's listings, boarding piers are ICONSIAM and Asiatique (depending on the option); arrive 15 to 30 minutes before departure. Reviews find the buffet uneven, with some dishes lukewarm. The cruise does not run on certain festive days (Loy Krathong, Christmas, New Year, Valentine's Day). See the listing.

Grand Chao Phraya with live show

More expensive (about $45), this offer includes the buffet, a welcome Thai dance, live singers, desserts, tea or coffee and a round-trip hotel transfer. The pier was not stated in our checks, and one review notes that wine is paid. See the listing.

Chao Phraya Princess, hotel transfer

Departure is from ICONSIAM. About $36, with a welcome drink (coffee, tea or water); alcohol is paid. The round-trip transfer exists only on some packages. One review found the air conditioning too cold. See the listing.

Noah, the "luxury" cruise

About $34, departures at 4:45 pm (sunset) and 7:45 pm from the ICONSIAM pier, 30+ Thai and international dishes, unlimited soft drinks, but no alcohol. Reviews are mixed: good meal, a crush at the buffet, and high water can stop the boat going under the bridge. See the listing.

Royal Galaxy, buffet

About $47, leaving Asiatique around 8 pm for a two-hour cruise, with a Thai and international buffet, a welcome drink, tea and coffee, a live band and Thai songs and dances. Unlimited drinks are not advertised. One traveller reports a long wait at boarding. See the listing.

What is not included, and the traps

  • Drinks: only the White Orchid offer advertises free beer; Noah includes soft drinks; elsewhere alcohol is paid. See our alcohol rules in Bangkok.
  • The pier: ICONSIAM or Asiatique depending on the offer. Check it before planning your journey; our guide to eating near ICONSIAM helps fill the wait.
  • The transfer: often only on some packages.
  • The route: it can change with the water level.
  • The buffet: fine, no more; reviews find it uneven.
  • The timing: boarding is about 30 minutes before departure.

Which offer to choose?

Booking at the right time

If you want to see the river before dark, choose a sunset departure (Noah offers 4:45 pm). Book ahead around public holidays. The river can also be seen by day: see the Chao Phraya, or take the Saen Saep canal boat for a cheap alternative.
