Source: 1991-2020 normals for the Bangkok Metropolis station of the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD), also used in our guide to the best time to visit Bangkok. These are averages: a given year can be drier or much wetter. The sticky heat feels worse than the thermometer suggests, especially between showers.
Rain often falls in the late afternoon or evening, more rarely in the morning: plan outdoor visits (temples, the Chao Phraya River) before 2 pm and keep covered activities in reserve, see what to do in Bangkok when it rains. The sun sets around 6:45 pm.
Crowds and prices in July
July has average crowds: European summer holidays bring visitors, but the monsoon keeps away much of the high-season clientele. Hotels are clearly cheaper than between November and February, and the best addresses can be booked without much notice. Queues at the Grand Palace and Wat Pho remain manageable if you arrive at opening time. The long weekend in mid-July, however, fills trains, buses and domestic flights, as many Thais travel. Events in July 2027
Asalha Bucha and Khao Phansa: Sunday 18 and Monday 19 July
Asalha Bucha commemorates the Buddha's first sermon; the next day, Khao Phansa marks the start of the monks' three-month rains retreat. In 2027 these two days fall on Sunday 18 and Monday 19 July, and the public holiday is moved to Monday 19: banks and government offices are closed. These are days of reflection: Thais offer candles and tapers at temples, and ceremonies take place in the evening. Visitors are welcome as long as they wear covering clothes, see what to wear to visit Bangkok's temples.
Alcohol sales are banned on both days in shops, convenience stores and most restaurants; hotels, international airport terminals and licensed entertainment venues are exempt. The rules are detailed in our guide to alcohol in Bangkok.
The King's birthday: Wednesday 28 July
28 July is the birthday of King Maha Vajiralongkorn and a national public holiday: on Wednesday 28 July 2027 banks and government offices are closed, while shopping centres, markets and restaurants stay open. Portraits and lights decorate the city's avenues.
What to wear and pack in July
- Light, quick-drying clothes: thin cotton or technical fibres rather than jeans.
- A compact umbrella or a poncho, kept in your bag every day.
- Sandals or shoes that cope with water, with a grippy sole: tiled pavements are slippery in the rain.
- A waterproof pouch for your phone and passport.
- A light scarf or a long-sleeved shirt for temples and for the air conditioning, which is very cold in the metro and shopping centres.
- Mosquito repellent: dengue cases rise during the rainy season, see health in Bangkok.
The best ideas for days out in July

- Temples in the morning: Wat Pho and Wat Arun are quieter than in winter; arrive at opening time, before the showers.
- Museums: the Museum Siam and the Jim Thompson House fill a rainy afternoon well; see also the museums of Bangkok.
- Shopping centres: Siam and ICONSIAM combine shops, restaurants and cinemas under air conditioning.
- Green parks: Lumphini Park is intensely green early in the morning.
- Thai massage: a safe bet when the rain lasts, see Thai massage in Bangkok.
- At the table: seasonal fruit at the market, covered street food and food courts under shelter.
