Source: 1991-2020 normals from the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) Bangkok Metropolis station, as used in our guide to the best time to visit Bangkok. These are averages: a given year can differ. Mornings are the most bearable, but afternoons often exceed 32 °C: schedule outdoor temples before 11 am and keep air-conditioned malls for midday. Night falls around 6 pm.

Fine-particle pollution

From December to March the air stagnates over the city and PM2.5 peaks are frequent, especially in January. In early 2026 the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) asked companies and government offices to work from home during peaks. Check the air quality index every morning, bring filter masks if you are sensitive or travelling with young children, and keep indoor activities in reserve. Health precautions are in our guide to emergencies and health in Bangkok.

Crowds and prices in January

January is part of the high season, which runs from November to February: about 3.7 million international arrivals in Thailand in January 2025, the busiest month of the year in our monthly guide. Hotel rates peak from mid-December to early January, then ease slightly in the second half of the month. Book several weeks ahead, especially by the river; to choose a neighbourhood, see where to stay in Bangkok, and to estimate costs see the Bangkok travel budget. Queues at the Grand Palace and Wat Pho are long in mid-morning: arrive at opening time.

Events in January 2027

1 January: the day after New Year's Eve

31 December 2026 and 1 January 2027 are public holidays: banks and government offices are closed, while shops and malls stay open. Transport is packed late on the 31st, then quiet on the morning of the 1st. For the countdowns and fireworks, see our guide to New Year's Eve in Bangkok.

Children's Day: Saturday 9 January

National Children's Day is celebrated on the second Saturday of January, which is 9 January 2027. On that day several sites and institutions run activities for children, often free, and family venues are packed. The programme has not been published yet; watch the announcements of the sites concerned. For outings with children, see Bangkok with children.

Ahead of Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year falls on Saturday 6 February 2027. Red decorations appear in Chinatown from late January, and the Yaowarat festival programme is announced by the BMA and the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) from January. See the page on Chinese New Year in Bangkok. For the whole year's calendar: festivals and events in Bangkok.

What to wear in January

  • Light, breathable clothes, in cotton or linen, with a thin layer for the often heavily air-conditioned malls, metros and restaurants.
  • Covered-up clothing for temples: shoulders and knees covered, see dress code in Bangkok's temples.
  • Hat, sunglasses and sunscreen: it hardly ever rains and the sun is strong.
  • A filter mask on high-pollution days.
