Museum Siam: the interactive museum of Thai identity

Updated on October 1, 2026

Museum Siam is a discovery museum devoted to a question that only sounds simple: what does it mean to be Thai? Housed in the former Ministry of Commerce, a neoclassical building completed in 1922, it stands on Rattanakosin Island, a five-minute walk from Wat Pho. Its permanent exhibition, "Decoding Thainess", tells the story of the country's history, beliefs, food and everyday life through interactive rooms rather than display cases. Admission costs 100 baht; allow 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours, and it makes an excellent air-conditioned refuge in the hottest hours or on a rainy day.

The building was constructed in 1921 and 1922, during the reign of Rama VI, to designs by the Italian architect Mario Tamagno, who also designed several official buildings in Bangkok. It has been a registered historic monument of the Fine Arts Department since 2005. The museum was opened here at the end of 2007 by the National Discovery Museum Institute (NDMI).

Decoding Thainess

The permanent exhibition spreads over 14 themed spaces on several floors. Projections, touch screens, games and recreated sets cover the origins of the Thai people, religion, architecture, dress, language, food and popular culture, and how the idea of "Thainess" has changed over time. The tone is lively and often playful, accessible without any prior knowledge.

In front of the facade, a large shaded lawn hosts sculptures and, regularly, cultural events. The museum also puts on temporary exhibitions, with a programme that changes through the year.

A family visit

The hands-on displays and activities make it one of the most child-friendly museums in Bangkok; admission is free for under-15s.
