The Truly Free Museums
| Museum | Entry | Closed | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| BACC (Bangkok Art and Culture Centre) | Free (exhibitions) | Monday | Contemporary art, in the heart of Siam |
| Bank of Thailand Museum | Free, by reservation | According to the calendar | Bang Khun Phrom Palace, limited slots |
| Bangkokian Museum | Free according to our sources | Monday (to be checked) | 1930s houses on Charoen Krung |
BACC: the Siam art centre is open Tuesday to Sunday, 10am to 8pm; only some shows or workshops are paid. It is the easiest to fit into a shopping day in Siam.
Bank of Thailand Museum: the visit is free but you must book online, in slots of 60 people. The latest information (July 2026) gives Saturday and Sunday at 10:30am and 2:30pm, with bookings opening 7 days ahead; places go fast.
Bangkokian Museum: this former family home near the river shows the life of a middle-class family in the 1930s. Entry is reported to be free, and opening days and hours vary by source (Tuesday to Sunday or Wednesday to Sunday, between 9am and 4pm): confirm before you set out.
Paid Museums with Free or Reduced Entry
- Museum Siam: THB 100 for everyone, THB 50 for students and young people; free for under-15s, over-60s, monks and people with disabilities. Closed on Monday.
- National Museum: THB 240 for foreigners, closed Monday and Tuesday. Guided tours by volunteers (in French on Wednesday and Thursday at 9:30am) are free; only the entry fee is paid.
- Queen Sirikit Museum of Textiles: included in the Grand Palace ticket; THB 150 on its own, free for under-12s.
- Wat Intharawihan: entry to the temple is free. It is not a museum, but the giant standing Buddha can be seen without a ticket.
Free, but Not a Museum
Several places can be visited at no cost: the courtyard of Wat Saket (only the climb is paid), the Giant Swing in front of Wat Suthat, and the courtyard of the Loha Prasat. Neighbourhood art centres and private galleries also have exhibitions without a ticket: see our guide to contemporary art in Bangkok.
Closing Days: The Monday Trap
Almost all of Bangkok's museums close on Monday (BACC, Museum Siam, MOCA, Bangkokian); the National Museum also closes on Tuesday. Sunday is the busiest day. When a museum closes for a public holiday, the notice on site takes precedence over the website: call or check their official page the day before.
A One-Day Itinerary Without a Ticket
- Morning: Bangkokian Museum, then the river at Charoen Krung.
- Midday: a cheap lunch from a street vendor or in a shopping-mall food court.
- Afternoon: BACC in Siam, open until 8pm.
- Weekend: a free slot at the Bank of Thailand Museum, to be booked 7 days ahead.
