Small-group temples tour with lunch: the safe choice

The tour covers Wat Lokayasutha, Wat Chaiwatthanaram, Wat Phra Si Sanphet and Wat Mahathat, with lunch at a local restaurant. It is one of the most reviewed listings for Ayutthaya. Travellers praise the guides; some find the lunch basic and ask for more vegetarian choice. See the tour.

Historical Park and Bang Pa-In Palace

It stops first at Bang Pa-In Palace, then visits Wat Mahathat, Wat Chaiwatthanaram and Wat Phra Si Sanphet. The day is long (9 to 10 h). Lunch costs extra and entrance fees are not clearly itemised in the listing: check before paying. Depending on the version, the meeting point is National Stadium BTS station (exit 2). It is not suitable for people with reduced mobility. See the tour.

Temples and a sunset boat ride

The programme: Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon, Wat Mahathat and Wat Chaiwatthanaram, then about an hour on the river by boat. Tickets, the snack and the boat are included in the private or English group options; a cheaper group option leaves them to you. Some travellers note the boat leaves a little before sunset. Another reports heavy traffic on the way back. See the tour.

A day with a private driver

The car and driver are yours for the day (about 9 h). It is the most flexible option for a family with children: you choose the stops. The base price includes neither tickets nor lunch: add the cost of each temple (see the Ayutthaya page). See the tour.

A private day with a guide

An English-speaking guide accompanies only your group, with hotel pickup (only in some areas of Bangkok), five temples and the national museum. It is the most expensive, but the only one in the list where the guide is yours alone, at your own pace. See the tour.

What is not included / pitfalls

  • Entrance tickets. Each major temple costs 50 baht for foreigners, or 220 baht with the six-temple combined ticket (rates from our page, October 2026). Depending on the tour, they are included or not.
  • Lunch costs extra on some tours.
  • Durations differ from page to page for the same tour: confirm the return time if you have a flight or a train.
  • Meeting points. Pickups are not made on the roadside or outside shopping malls.
  • Dress code: shoulders and knees covered in temples.
  • Weekends are busier; one guide advised a weekday.

Doing Ayutthaya on your own?

The air-conditioned train links Krung Thep Aphiwat to Ayutthaya in about 1 h 15, for at most 50 baht until 31 October 2026: see the Ayutthaya page and our train trips from Bangkok. You gain freedom and save money, but lose the guide's explanations and the transfers.

Booking at the right time

Go on a weekday if you can, and choose an afternoon departure if you fear the morning crowds. Times, prices and durations change: confirm them on the listing before booking.
