Krung Thep Aphiwat Station (Bang Sue): Bangkok's new central station and its trains
Krung Thep Aphiwat station, also called Bang Sue Grand Station, has been Bangkok's central station for long-distance trains since 19 January 2023. Opened in 2021 for the SRT Red Lines, it is considered the largest railway station in Southeast Asia, with more than twenty platforms, some of them 600 metres long. It replaces Hua Lamphong for trains to the north (including the night trains to Chiang Mai), the northeast and the south. It lies in the north of the city, on the border of the Chatuchak and Bang Sue districts. You come here to catch a train, rarely to sightsee.
Highlights

The façade and the main hall
An immense glass façade, with the "Bang Sue Grand Station" lettering, announces a modern and very large hall. Allow time to find your platform, as distances are long.
The platforms and long-distance trains
Fast, express and night trains leave from here for the north (Chiang Mai), the northeast and the south. The brightly coloured carriages are photogenic.
The SRT Red Lines
The Dark Red (to Rangsit) and Light Red (to Taling Chan) lines serve the station, useful for the northern and western suburbs.
The metro connection
A passage links the station to Bang Sue MRT station (Blue Line), also reachable from Tao Poon.

Tips
Arrive early, the station is huge. The night train to Chiang Mai and the excursion trains leave from here: see our guide to the Bangkok–Chiang Mai night train and the one on train excursions from Bangkok. For the former central station, see the page on Hua Lamphong station. Book long-distance tickets in advance and confirm the departure station with the SRT (1690): some trains changed station in 2023, and high-speed services are still at the planning stage. Allow for a taxi or Grab if you are carrying luggage; see our transport in Bangkok.
