Dusit Zoo in Bangkok: closed in 2018, what is left to see

Updated on October 9, 2026

Dusit Zoo, in Khao Din Park, closed for good on 30 September 2018: there are no animals left to see and you should not look for it on a map any more. Opened to the public in 1938 on a former royal garden of King Chulalongkorn, it was the country's oldest zoo, covering about 19 hectares next to Dusit Palace. According to published figures it received about 2.5 million visitors a year. This page is a closure notice: it explains what happened, where the animals went, what you can still see around the site and where to take children instead.

Highlights

What the zoo was

What the zoo was

An archive photo: a hippopotamus in its pool, before the closure. The zoo, run by the City of Bangkok until 1954 and then by the Zoological Park Organization of Thailand, was known for its central lake, its shade and its position in the middle of the city. The animals were moved to several sites around the country in autumn 2018; the birds went to Khao Kheow Open Zoo, in Chonburi province.

The new zoo, outside the city

The new zoo, outside the city

A new zoo was built on a site of some 300 rai in Thanyaburi, in Pathum Thani province north of Bangkok, to replace the old one. We could not confirm whether it is open or what it charges: check before you go.

What remains in the district

What remains in the district

The land belongs to the Dusit royal grounds and its redevelopment has been announced as for public use. We could not confirm the current state of access. Next door, the Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall and Wat Benchamabophit remain easy visits.

Practical info

Tips

For children, the simplest option in town is Sea Life Bangkok Ocean World, inside the Siam Paragon mall, or, further out and by car, Safari World. The Bangkok with children guide has more ideas. For the district, read our Dusit guide and the page on Vimanmek Mansion and Dusit Palace, also closed. Many old travel pages still list the zoo with opening hours and prices: do not trust them.

How to get there

Former site: Khao Din Park, Ratchawithi Road, Dusit district, Bangkok 10300, next to the old Parliament. No BTS or metro station nearby: take a taxi or Grab from Siam or the old city.

Opening hours

Best: Zoo closed since 2018
Closed permanently since 30 September 2018
