Chatuchak, Queen Sirikit and Rot Fai Parks in Bangkok: opening hours, cycling and butterflies

Updated on October 5, 2026

In the north of Bangkok, three neighbouring parks make up the largest free green space in the north of the city: Chatuchak Park, Queen Sirikit Park and Rot Fai Park (Wachirabenchathat, "the train park"). They border Chatuchak Market and can be explored on foot or by bike, with lakes, lawns, cycle paths and a butterfly garden. It is the easiest break after the weekend market, and a proper morning stroll on weekdays. Allow one to three hours depending on how many parks you combine.

Highlights

Chatuchak Park

Chatuchak Park

The largest of the three, with lakes, bridges and shaded paths facing the towers of the district. Locals come to run, picnic and practise tai chi from dawn. It is the easiest to reach from Chatuchak Park metro station.

Rot Fai Park (Wachirabenchathat)

Rot Fai Park (Wachirabenchathat)

A large lake surrounded by trees, lawns and themed gardens. Bikes can be rented at the entrance and a cycle track goes around the park: this is the park where riding is allowed and the most pleasant for an active stroll. Do not confuse it with the Talat Rot Fai night market, which is held elsewhere in the city.

Queen Sirikit Park

Queen Sirikit Park

Quieter and more manicured, with lawns, ponds and beds of tropical plants. Bikes are not allowed, which makes it the corner for walkers and photographers. It closes earlier than its neighbours: plan to visit before the end of the afternoon.

The butterfly garden and insectarium

Straddling the three parks, the Bangkok Butterfly Garden and Insectarium shows tropical butterflies, host plants and insect collections, in greenhouses and outdoors. According to the sources consulted, it is open Tuesday to Sunday during the day. Good for children and for a moment in the shade.

Cycling

Rent a bike at the entrance of Rot Fai Park and ride around the lake: it is the most pleasant way to link the three parks. Prices vary by type of bike and are posted on site.

Chatuchak Market and Or Tor Kor next door

Just to the south, Chatuchak Market takes over at the weekend, and the covered Or Tor Kor market sells fruit and ready-made dishes every day: combine them with a break in the park.

Tips

Come before 9am for the cool air and the joggers, or in the late afternoon: in the middle of the day the heat on the lawns is strong. Bring water, a hat and mosquito repellent. A picnic is easy to put together with dishes bought at Or Tor Kor. For a more central park, see Lumphini Park; for a recent urban forest, Benjakitti Park. Prices checked in October 2026: free entry to the three parks and the butterfly garden; bike rental is paid.

How to get there
