House of Taste: the most complete for the price
The class is held in Sukhumvit: you prepare four dishes, and the menu changes with the day of the week (a Monday, for example: papaya salad, pad thai, green chicken curry, mango sticky rice). The market visit is only in the morning, because it closes at 11:00; in the afternoon and evening it is replaced by mango carving. In the morning you meet at BTS Asoke (exit 3) or MRT Sukhumvit (exit 3). Alcoholic drinks cost extra. The same school has other listings, including a hands-on version and a private one: check which one you are booking. See the class.
Maliwan: small group and a tuk-tuk
You reach the market by tuk-tuk, then return to the school for a welcome drink and a demonstration, before cooking four recipes. The instructor decides the menu before the date. The group size is stated differently depending on the listing (6 or 8 people at most). Children must be accompanied and do not get their own station. The class is not suitable for people with back or mobility problems. See the class.
Silom Thai Cooking School: the budget option
The school is near Chong Nonsi BTS station and offers a market or garden visit. The menu mentions tom yum, pad thai, papaya salad, Thai curry and mango sticky rice. One traveller reports cooking three dishes himself, with the others demonstrated. All ingredients are halal, with no pork or alcohol. See the class.
Blue Elephant: a class in a well-known restaurant
The class takes place in the Sathorn restaurant (BTS Surasak). The morning class includes a market visit; there is no afternoon class on Sundays. You cook four dishes and receive an apron, a certificate, the recipes and a souvenir bag. The listing mentions a hotel transfer, but the meeting point it gives is the restaurant: ask which applies. See the class.
Class with free pickup
This 6-hour option includes pickup, a market visit and a class. The listing we saw does not name the school: read the listing for the location and the menu. See the class.
What is not included / pitfalls
- The market is not always included: it is only offered with morning classes at House of Taste and Blue Elephant.
- Cooking or watching: at Silom, one traveller says students cook only three dishes. Ask how many you cook yourself.
- The menu changes by day: confirm it if you have an allergy or a diet (vegetarian, halal), and mention it when booking.
- Alcoholic drinks are extra at House of Taste.
- The meeting point: check it (BTS station, school or restaurant) before the day of the class.
Which school should you choose?
- First time, good value: House of Taste.
- Small group: Maliwan.
- Tight budget or halal meal: Silom Thai Cooking School.
- Couple, special occasion: Blue Elephant.
- No wish to find the address: the class with pickup.
- With children: check each school's rules; Maliwan requires them to be accompanied.
