The big markets not to miss

The colourful tarpaulins of a Bangkok night market

Chatuchak, the weekend market

Chatuchak Market is the largest market in the country: more than 15,000 stalls, open Saturday and Sunday from 9am to 6pm, with a plant market on Wednesday and Thursday and wholesale selling on Friday evening. Allow at least half a day.

Or Tor Kor, fruit and ready-made dishes

Opposite Chatuchak, Or Tor Kor Market is open every day from 6am to 6pm: seasonal fruit, fresh produce, takeaway dishes. It is a good option on weekdays, when the big market is closed.

Pak Khlong Talat, the flower market

A wholesale market open around the clock, Pak Khlong Talat is busiest from 4am to 8am. People come for jasmine garlands, roses and lotus, on the riverside near Chinatown.

Jodd Fairs

The Jodd Fairs night market, near Rama 9 MRT station, is open every day from about 5pm to 1am, with a big street food offer. It is one of the easiest to reach by metro.

The other night markets

Several "train" night markets (Talat Rot Fai) exist in other districts; their days and hours vary and are mostly concentrated at the end of the week, in the evening. Check the day before you go: they are often closed early in the week. For Bangkok evenings in general, our guide Bangkok at night gives some pointers.

Yaowarat, in the evening

In Chinatown, the main street of Yaowarat lights up in the evening and turns into a street food market, except on Mondays when many vendors are absent.

Markets outside Bangkok

Floating markets

Floating markets are an excursion of their own: see Damnoen Saduak and our guide to Bangkok's floating markets to choose.

The Maeklong train market

The Maeklong train market, where the stalls fold away as the train passes, is visited on a day trip from the capital.

Practical tips

Bargaining

Bargaining is common in clothing and craft markets, but not in food markets or at stalls with posted prices. Stay smiling, offer a reasonable price and know when to walk away. For amounts, payments and tipping, see our guide to money, payment and tipping in Bangkok.

Heat, cash and belongings

Come early in the morning or in the late afternoon, with water, cash in small notes and a closed bag carried in front of you in the crowd. For the traps to avoid, see our guide to scams and safety in Bangkok.

What to taste

Markets are also a good time to eat: see our guide to street food in Bangkok and the one on Thai desserts.
