Jay Fai: what to know before you go

Jay Fai (Raan Jay Fai) is at 327 Maha Chai Road in the old town. It is the only Bangkok street food spot to have earned a Michelin star in the city's very first selection. The chef cooks over charcoal wearing protective goggles, and her crab omelette is the most famous dish; prices are far above an ordinary street stall.

  • Days and hours: several sources say Wednesday to Saturday, during the day; confirm on the restaurant's Instagram before you go, as this changes.
  • Booking: sources disagree. Some say walk-ins only, others say you must request a booking by message, with slots filled long in advance. Do not count on a table without checking.
  • Queue: expect long waits if you turn up without a booking, especially at weekends.
  • Budget: expect an amount nothing like a street stall; read the prices on site before ordering.

Food tour or starred table: which to choose?

A food tour lets you taste several Michelin-recognised stalls in about three hours with an English-speaking guide. According to the listings, tuk-tuk tours pass Jay Fai for an explanation but do not guarantee a meal there: the place may be full or the wait too long. The stalls visited are "recommended" or Bib Gourmand, not starred.

For a real starred table, book directly with the restaurant, often several weeks ahead, for a tasting menu. Since the 2026 Michelin Guide Thailand (November 2025), Sorn and Sühring both hold three stars. We have no verified GetYourGuide link for a starred dinner: book on the restaurant's own site and read the cancellation terms. Full details on the tables are in our guide to Michelin restaurants in Bangkok, and for a view as well, see restaurants with a view in Bangkok.

Combining it with the old town and Chinatown

Jay Fai is very close to Wat Ratchanatdaram and Loha Prasat and Wat Saket: visit them in the morning, then have lunch or join the queue. In the evening Chinatown takes over: Sampeng Lane, Talat Noi and our Chinatown guide. Practical tips

  • Book the tour a few days ahead, especially for weekends.
  • Come with a moderate appetite: the tastings follow one another.
  • Tell the organiser about any allergy or meat-free diet before booking.
  • Keep cash for the stalls: see money, payment and tipping.
  • Beware of street offers: see scams in Bangkok. For all the dishes to try: street food in Bangkok.
