Bang Krachao (or Bang Kachao) is a 16 km² peninsula wrapped in a wide loop of the Chao Phraya, right across from Khlong Toei port. It belongs to Phra Pradaeng district, in Samut Prakan province, and is made up of six subdistricts. Orchards, coconut groves, mangroves and stilt villages have largely been spared from building, which earned it the nickname of Bangkok's "green lung"; Time magazine named it Asia's "best urban oasis" in 2006. You explore it by bike, along narrow raised paths above the canals, after a short boat crossing. Allow half a day.
Highlights

Sri Nakhon Khuean Khan Park
This public park and botanical garden of 148 rai (about 24 hectares), laid out on a former abandoned orchard, is run by the Royal Forest Department. Lawns, a large lake, waterside pavilions, wooden boardwalks through the wetlands and a bird-watching tower are free to visit. Cars stay at the entrance: you get around on foot or by bike.

The raised paths
Between the villages, narrow concrete paths run above the canals and marshes, under palms and banana trees. They are shared with locals on motorbikes and often have no railing: ride slowly, keep left, and get off your bike to let others pass in tight spots.

Bang Nam Phueng floating market
Run by the people of the subdistrict, this market sets up on Saturdays and Sundays from 8 am to 2 pm, public holidays included, along a canal. You will find dishes cooked on the spot, garden fruit and handicrafts from the peninsula.
Renting a bike
Rental stalls wait near the pier and at the entrance to Sri Nakhon Khuean Khan Park. An ID may be asked for as a deposit: bring your passport or a copy. Check the brakes and ask for a bike with a basket.

Tips
The park and the market are free; only the boat and the bike hire cost money, payable in cash. Bring water, sunscreen and insect repellent: shops are few and far between outside the villages. With young children, stick to the park paths rather than the narrow village walkways. For more raised walkways through greenery without leaving the centre, see [Benjakitti Park](/fr/attractions/parc-benjakitti).
How to get there
MRT Blue Line to Khlong Toei or Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre, then a taxi to Wat Khlong Toei Nok pier. From there, a boat crosses the Chao Phraya to the Bang Krachao landing, running daily from about 6 am to 8 pm; pay when boarding and keep your ticket if you bought a return. Sri Nakhon Khuean Khan Park is a few minutes by bike from the landing. Park: Bang Krachao subdistrict, Phra Pradaeng district, Samut Prakan province.
