Source: 1991-2020 normals for the Bangkok Metropolis station of the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD), reported to the World Meteorological Organization. These are averages: any given year can differ a lot, and late September 2026 saw extreme rain (see the best time to visit Bangkok). Showers are often short and violent, in the late afternoon or evening; mornings are drier more often. Low-lying streets can flood: the BTS and MRT remain the safest way to get around, see transport in Bangkok. Rain clearly eases in the second half of the month.
Crowds and prices in October
October belongs to the low season: few foreign visitors, short queues at the temples and hotels among the cheapest of the year, especially early in the month. The 23 October long weekend sends many Thais on the road: trains, buses and domestic flights fill up fast, see also day trips from Bangkok. Prices climb again as November approaches. October 2026 events
Vegetarian Festival: 10 to 18 October

The Vegetarian Festival ("jay" in Thai), which follows the Chinese lunar calendar, fills Chinatown with vegetarian food stalls draped in yellow and flags. In 2026 it runs from Saturday 10 to Sunday 18 October. See the page on the Bangkok Vegetarian Festival and the Chinatown guide; Wat Mangkon Kamalawat is the heart of the ceremonies. Come in the early evening, before the biggest crowds.
13 October: King Bhumibol Memorial Day
Tuesday 13 October 2026, the anniversary of the death of King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX) in 2016, is a public holiday: banks and government offices are closed, Thais dress in black or white and make offerings. Shops and most attractions stay open, but check each place's hours.
23 October: King Chulalongkorn Day
Friday 23 October 2026 is a public holiday (King Rama V Day). Offerings are laid before the equestrian statue in Dusit, near Wat Benchamabophit: a good moment to discover the Dusit district, but expect crowds. The weekend becomes a three-day break (23 to 25 October).
End of Buddhist Lent
The end of Buddhist Lent (Ok Phansa) falls on the full moon, around 26 October 2026: temples hold ceremonies and processions. Alcohol sales may be restricted on such days; see alcohol rules in Bangkok. Exact dates should be confirmed with official sources.
