Thip Samai: what to know

  • Address: 313 Mahachai Road, old city, near Wat Saket and the Golden Mount.
  • Hours: sources disagree. Time Out lists Tuesday to Sunday from 17:30 to 02:00; another guide says daily from 17:00 to 02:00; others give 9:00 to midnight and closed on Tuesday. Check the restaurant's current hours or a map listing on the day.
  • Price: guides give 50 to 250 baht for a plate, 60 to 200 baht in another. A large fresh orange juice was quoted at 199 baht, much more than the noodles.
  • Queue: expect one at dinner time; arrive early or late.

How to order and what to look for

Good pad thai is stir-fried rice noodles with tamarind, egg, dried shrimp, tofu, peanuts and chives, with lime, sugar and chilli on the side. Ask for the version you prefer (with shrimp, or wrapped in egg) and add the condiments at the table. The sweet-sour balance is a matter of taste: try it first, then adjust.

Other places to eat pad thai

Pad thai is on almost every street-food menu in Bangkok. Our guide to street food in Bangkok lists the dishes and the best streets, and our pages on eating near Khao San and in Sukhumvit help you find a stall near your hotel. Look for a busy stall with a hot wok and a short menu.

Learn to cook it

If you want to reproduce it at home, a hands-on class is more useful than another plate. This Bangkok hands-on Thai cooking class with a market tour lets you choose ingredients at the market and cook several dishes yourself. Check the menu for your date to see whether pad thai is included. More choices in our guide to Thai cooking classes in Bangkok.

Practical tips

  • Say "mai phet" for not spicy and "mai sai tua" if you do not want peanuts.
  • If you are vegetarian, see our vegan guide to Bangkok.
  • Carry small bills for street stalls.
