Booking the night before: what works, what does not
- Free cancellation is often possible up to 24 hours before departure: if you book for tomorrow, you may no longer be refundable if you change your mind. Read the "cancellation" line on the listing before paying.
- Pickup time matters more than price. Departures for the floating market are often very early (around 6:00 to 6:30 on some tours); the sanctuary near Pattaya leaves at the same hour, with about two hours on the road each way.
- The meeting point is sometimes a BTS station (for example National Stadium) rather than your hotel. Check the station and how long it takes to get there with our advice on BTS or MRT and Grab or taxi.
- Small groups fill up: in high season (November to February), near dates sell out faster. If your first choice is full, move on to the next.
- Prices change from one day to the next: the one you saw this morning is not guaranteed tonight.
Where to sleep for this itinerary. Stay in Sukhumvit: it is the most practical area for leaving in the morning and getting back in the evening. Compare hotels with free cancellation in Sukhumvit and see our where-to-stay guide (Bangkok) to pick the neighbourhood.
Ayutthaya: the safe bet
This is the easiest trip to book the night before, because several versions exist (group with lunch, sunset boat, private driver). Options, entrance fees and pitfalls are detailed in our comparison Ayutthaya from Bangkok. If you prefer to go on your own, the air-conditioned train links Krung Thep Aphiwat station to Ayutthaya in about 1 h 15; see our train day trips from Bangkok. See the tour.
Floating market and Maeklong train: an early start
The train reaches Maeklong market at 8:30, 11:10, 14:30 and 17:40 (SRT times seen in October 2026): a tour that is not timed to these passes will miss them. The full comparison is in Floating market and Maeklong train: which tour?, and the difference between the markets in Damnoen Saduak or Amphawa. For a day that ends in the evening, Amphawa is mostly lively from Friday to Sunday. See the tour.
Kanchanaburi: a full day, a serious subject
The small-group historical day includes the war cemetery, the Thailand-Burma Railway Centre, the bridge and a train ride on the original track, with lunch. It lasts 8.5 to 10 hours, including 2 h 30 to 3 h on the road each way. At the end of September 2026, floods closed the section between Tha Kilen and Nam Tok: ask which stretch will be covered. The cemetery is open Monday to Friday from 8:00 to 17:00 and Saturday from 8:00 to 12:00; on a Sunday it is not guaranteed to be open. Details: River Kwai from Bangkok. See the tour.

Elephants: only places without riding
The most booked place from Bangkok is the Living Green Elephant Sanctuary: €53.25, 4.9 out of 5 from 2,543 reviews, 6 to 7 hours with transfer, no elephant riding. The programme includes bathing with the elephants; if you prefer to watch without touching, first read our guide to ethical elephant visits from Bangkok and the comparison of sanctuaries. See the tour.
What if you do not have a full day?
The trips on this page take the whole day. To stay in the city, see Bangkok in one day; for other ideas, our overview of day trips from Bangkok.
