Historical small-group day: the best value
This tour visits the Kanchanaburi war cemetery, the Thailand-Burma Railway Centre and the bridge, with a train ride on the original track. It includes lunch, entrance fees, the English-speaking guide, the air-conditioned van and the basic train ticket (100 baht); a reserved seat costs 200 baht more. The listed duration varies from 8.5 to 10 h depending on the page. See the tour.
Death Railway and Hellfire Pass with lunch
This visit adds the Hellfire Pass memorial and museum, where prisoners cut through the rock by hand, and a train ride of about 1 h 30. It is the best option for understanding what happened, and it stays reasonable in price. The listing offers a small group or a private version. See the tour.
Cemetery, JEATH, bridge, Hellfire Pass and Erawan Falls
This 11-hour day covers the cemetery, the JEATH museum, the bridge, Hellfire Pass, then the Erawan waterfalls. According to one version of the listing the train ride is optional, and it is not clear whether lunch is paid for. One traveller says the group was merged with others and the day lasted nearly 15 hours, with little time at the cemetery. Check the group size before booking. See the tour.
A 10-hour small group
A small-group day with pickup and lunch at a local restaurant. The price seen in a search snippet (about $149) is much higher than the other group tours: confirm the rate and the programme on the listing. See the tour.
Death Railway and bridge, private
An 8-hour day for your group alone, with hotel pickup. It does not include Hellfire Pass. It is the most flexible if you travel with older people or children and want time at the cemetery. See the tour.
What is not included / pitfalls
- The train may be altered. At the end of September 2026, floods closed the section between Tha Kilen and Nam Tok, including the Tham Krasae viaduct (see our Kanchanaburi page). Ask the operator which stretch will be ridden before booking.
- The days are long: 2 h 30 to 3 h on the road each way.
- Tips and personal expenses are generally extra.
- Some tours in the region add animal attractions (tiger temple, elephant rides): we have not included them. Read the programme before choosing.
- Paid entrances: the Thailand-Burma Railway Centre costs 160 baht; the cemetery and the bridge are free (rates from our page, October 2026).
- Respect: the cemetery is a place of remembrance; dress soberly and keep quiet.
Going on your own?
The ordinary train leaves Thonburi station at 7:45 for 100 baht: see our train trips from Bangkok. You save money, but Hellfire Pass and Erawan are mostly reached by tour or car. If you prefer to drive yourself, you can compare car rentals.
Which tour should you choose?
- Budget: the historical small-group day.
- History lover: Death Railway and Hellfire Pass.
- See everything at once: cemetery, JEATH, bridge, Hellfire Pass and Erawan, if the group is reasonable.
- Family, older travellers: the private visit.
