Elephants World and Erawan Waterfall: the full day

Elephants World is a sanctuary in the Kanchanaburi region whose listings state there is no elephant riding and no shows. The GetYourGuide format lasts about 13.5 hours from Bangkok, with transfer and a meal, and adds Erawan Waterfall; the national park entry fee (about THB 400, cash according to the listing) is paid on site. It is the longest and most expensive of the selection: book it if you also want to see Kanchanaburi. For the region, see Kanchanaburi and the Bridge over the River Kwai. See the offer.

Ethical sanctuary near Pattaya: feed, walk, bathe

A drive of about two hours each way, an early pickup (around 6:00 to 6:30am depending on your hotel), then feeding, walking and bathing with the elephants, with lunch and fruit included. The operator says it does not offer elephant riding. The prices seen vary a lot between listings ($125 to $149, sometimes per group): check what your option includes. See also Pattaya from Bangkok. See the offer.

Bangkok Elephant Park: care and a meal, no forced bathing

The listing describes an elephant care experience (food preparation, feeding) in small groups, with, according to the listing, no riding, no forced bathing and no shows. Two sessions were offered (morning and afternoon), with hotel pickup as an option. A recent review reports a pickup of over two hours in traffic to collect other travellers: ask for a private transfer or make your own way there. The listing is ambiguous about lunch, so check that it is included. See the offer.

Living Green: the best seller from Bangkok

At EUR 53.25, 4.9 out of 5 and 2,543 reviews, this is the most booked format from Bangkok. The sanctuary states a policy of no elephant riding, no chains and no shows. The programme includes feeding, a short jungle walk and bathing with the elephants: if you prefer to watch without touching, this is not the right format. The transfer leaves from Bangkok (or from a meeting point), the meal is vegetarian, and cancellation is free up to 24 hours before. Allow 6 to 7 hours including transport. See the offer.

Guided sanctuary visit with transfer: the cheapest half day

A half day with a Thai lunch and optional hotel transfer, around $49. One result says no riding, no shows and no bathing; we could not confirm this on the listing itself, so read it and ask the venue if it matters to you. The outbound drive is about 30 minutes and the return about an hour according to the listing seen. See the offer.

What is not included / the traps

  • "Ethical" is not a protected word: even without riding, some sanctuaries offer bathing, selfies or close contact that animal welfare organisations discourage. The listings on this page say what they do, but read recent reviews and visitors' photos.
  • Travel time: allow an hour and a half to two hours each way to Pattaya or Chonburi, more to Kanchanaburi. Shared pickups lengthen the day.
  • Extras: Erawan park entry, luggage (a surcharge for large suitcases is listed on the Living Green page), drinks and personal expenses.
  • What to wear: clothes that can get dirty, sunscreen and mosquito repellent.
  • Touts: do not book elephant rides on the street or in Ayutthaya, even "gentle" ones. See Bangkok with children for other ideas without animals.

Which offer to choose?

  • First visit, good balance: Living Green.
  • Watch without touching or bathing: Bangkok Elephant Park, or the guided visit with transfer after checking.
  • Full day with nature: Elephants World and Erawan Waterfall.
  • Families with young children: a half day, to limit hours on the road.
  • Small budget: the guided visit with transfer, provided you check the bathing policy.

Booking at the best time

High season runs from November to February: book a few days ahead. Avoid very busy days (Chinese holidays, festivals): one review mentions a group of about a hundred people during Chinese New Year. For other trips, see the best day trips from Bangkok.
