Rain over Bangkok seen from the Golden Mount (Wat Saket), in May

Bangkok average May
Average maximum temperature 35.1°C
Average minimum temperature 26.9°C
Rainfall 217 mm
Rain days (at least 1 mm) 12
Sunshine 196 h

Source: 1991-2020 normals for the Bangkok Metropolis station of the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD), consulted in October 2026. May's rain, more than twice April's, falls mostly in the second half of the month in short, violent storms. Mornings are usually dry: plan outdoor visits then. In a downpour, taxis and ride-hailing cars become hard to find; the BTS and MRT remain the safest way to get around, see transport in Bangkok. For the whole season, see the best time to visit Bangkok.

Crowds and prices in May

It is a low-season month: crowds are light, queues at temples are short and hotels are cheaper than in winter. The 1-4 May holiday is the exception: Thais travel in large numbers, trains, buses and domestic flights are busy, and nearby excursions such as Ayutthaya are busier. To choose a neighbourhood, see where to stay in Bangkok, and for your spending the Bangkok travel budget.

May 2027 events

Saturday 1 to Tuesday 4 May: four-day weekend

Labour Day (Saturday 1 May) is moved to Monday 3 May, and Tuesday 4 May is Coronation Day, a public holiday. Banks and government offices are closed; shops, malls and sights generally stay open, but check each place's hours. Withdraw cash before the break, see paying in Bangkok.

Thursday 20 May: Visakha Bucha

Visakha Bucha, a Buddhist holy day, is a public holiday on 20 May 2027. Temples hold ceremonies and candlelit processions in the evening, and many worshippers attend: covering clothes are required, see dress code in temples. Alcohol sales are banned in shops and most restaurants that day; hotels and the international terminals of airports are exempt, see alcohol in Bangkok.

What to wear in May

  • Light, quick-drying clothes, because the heat stays strong between showers.
  • A compact umbrella or a poncho in your bag every day.
  • Sandals or shoes that cope with water: pavements flood quickly.
  • A waterproof pouch for your phone and passport.
  • Mosquito repellent: dengue cases rise in the rainy season, see the health in Bangkok guide.
