Can you drink the tap water?

The cautious answer is no, not directly. The water is treated to standard before it leaves the plant, but it then travels through old pipes and, in most buildings, a rooftop or basement tank that can affect it. In practice, Bangkok residents drink bottled or filtered water. For a short trip it is better not to take the risk: a stomach bug costs more in lost days than a bottle of water.
Where to find drinking water
- Sealed bottles: sold everywhere (convenience stores, supermarkets, kiosks) for a few baht per small bottle. Check that the cap is intact.
- Filtered-water machines: found on the corner of many streets, charging a few baht per litre; you bring your own bottle. This is the cheapest and least wasteful option.
- Hotels and hostels: many offer bottles or a water dispenser. Ask whether the water is filtered before filling your bottle.
- Filter bottle: useful on a long stay; it does not replace sealed bottles for a traveller with a sensitive stomach.
Ice, juices and brushing your teeth
- Ice: in established restaurants and cafés the ice is usually industrial (cylinders with a hole through the middle) and made with treated water; it is common and low-risk. Be careful with crushed or block ice at small stalls with limited clean water.
- Juices and fresh-pressed drinks: choose busy stalls with a high turnover.
- Brushing your teeth: as a precaution, use bottled water for the first few days, especially if your stomach is sensitive.
- Fruit and raw vegetables: sometimes washed in tap water; prefer fruit that is peeled in front of you.
If you get sick
Traveller's diarrhoea is treated with fluids (oral rehydration salts from a pharmacy) and rest; see a doctor if it lasts more than two days, or if there is fever or blood. Useful addresses are in our guide to emergencies and health in Bangkok.
