What a trial class looks like
A beginner class almost always follows the same pattern: warm-up and skipping, learning the guard and footwork, then punches, kicks, knees and elbows on pads ("pao") held by the trainer, and a cool-down with stretching. It is not a fight: nobody asks you to hit anyone. Expect to sweat, and Bangkok's heat helps.
Group or private?
- Group: cheaper, more atmosphere, but the trainer looks after everyone. Good for a first try.
- Private: the trainer is all yours and corrects your technique. A bit more expensive, useful for a first time or if you have an injury.
- Several sessions: some camps offer weekly packages; ask the gym, we did not note their prices.
Which gym to choose
- To try it with no fuss: Yokkao, on Sukhumvit Soi 16, with two group classes a day.
- For a friendly class near a BTS station: Watchara, a short walk from BTS Phloen Chit.
- For a private trainer at comfortable hours: FITFAC, which has several locations.
- Near the university district: Project H, in Samyan.
To stay in the same area, see Sukhumvit; it is well served by the BTS.
What to bring
- A towel, light sports clothes (shorts, T-shirt) and a water bottle.
- No shoes: you train barefoot.
- Valuables: leave them at the hotel or in the locker if the gym has one.
- Gloves and hand wraps are usually lent; ask when you book.
Before you book
- Health: if you have an injury, a weak back or heart, or are pregnant, talk to the trainer and see a doctor. Travel insurance that covers sports activities is useful: see emergencies and health in Bangkok.
- Heat: avoid midday; an early-morning or late-afternoon class is easier to bear. Eat light beforehand and drink plenty.
- Training camps: gyms with accommodation exist, but compare reviews: we did not check their prices.
- Pitfalls: book only through the gym or a recognised platform, not through a tout on the street; see scams in Bangkok.
- Budget: a session is paid on top of your other expenses; see the Bangkok travel budget.
We did not see a bookable Muay Thai class offer from our partners at the date of this guide: book directly on the gym's website.
After class
The Sukhumvit gyms are a few minutes from restaurants: see eating in Sukhumvit. If you plan a fight night the same day, read the tickets guide first.
