Monday: the rule to remember
Almost all state museums are closed on Monday. On Tuesday too for the National Museum and the National Gallery. If you are in Bangkok on a Monday, the Jim Thompson House, the Royal Barges and most temples remain open. See free museums.
Public holidays
Fine Arts Department museums often close on public holidays. Coming up: 5 December 2026 (the late King Bhumibol's birthday, a Saturday: Monday 7 December is a substitute holiday) and 10 December (Constitution Day). 31 December is listed as a holiday by some sources and not by others: check. Museums may stay open, but do not count on it.
Booking ahead
Most museums sell tickets on site, without reservation. For the Jim Thompson House, which is visited with a guided tour included, the entry ticket with tour on GetYourGuide saves you looking for the queue on a busy day. The official price is 250 THB for an adult.
One day per museum
On Wednesdays or Thursdays, the National Museum offers free guided tours at 9:30 am; see the National Museum page. At weekends the Jim Thompson House is busier: come at opening.
