The method

Watch for a few seconds: even a tight stream of motorbikes has gaps, and riders steer around a pedestrian whose path is predictable. Do not run and do not step back. Look right first, because traffic drives on the left. A simple rule: the pedestrian gives way to everyone.

Bangkok-specific traps

Pedestrian lights can be very long (minutes at big junctions), which tempts people to cross elsewhere. BTS and MRT stations often link both sides of an avenue, which is the safest way over. On pavements, motorbikes come up behind you fast and quietly. With children, hold their hand before you leave the kerb.

FAQ

Do zebra crossings protect you in Bangkok? Not reliably. Several expat guides repeat that priority is not respected as it is in Europe.

Can I cross with a local? Yes, it is the most common advice: stand right next to a resident who is crossing.

Where is it easiest? On pedestrian streets and around the elevated train stations.
