Suan Luang Rama IX Park: Bangkok's giant botanical garden, hours, prices and how to get there by metro

Updated on October 5, 2026

Suan Luang Rama IX Park is Bangkok's largest public park: about 80 hectares of lawns, lakes, themed gardens and paths in Prawet, in the east of the city. It was created in 1987 for the 60th birthday of King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX), whose name it bears. People come to stroll far from the centre, hire a pedal boat on the lake, see the orchids and tropical plants of its botanical garden and cycle along its paths. Since the Yellow Line metro opened, a station has carried the park's name. Entry is very cheap, and free at certain hours; allow two to three hours.

Highlights

The lake and its pavilions

The lake and its pavilions

The big stretch of water is the heart of the park: Thai-style pavilions with slender rooflines are reflected in the water, surrounded by flower beds. A circular building by the lake, the Ho Ratchamangkala, shows royal arts and antiquities; information panels run along its outdoor terrace.

The paths link lawns, groves and clipped hedges, lit in the evening. The park is a place to walk and exercise for people in eastern Bangkok: you will meet joggers, families picnicking and cyclists on the dedicated tracks.

At the end of the day, the low light on the lake is the best moment in the park. Pedal boats are hired at the water's edge for a modest sum, with a refundable deposit according to several sources: check the prices on site.

The botanical garden

Over about 150 rai (24 hectares), it brings together an orchid and fern house, a geodesic dome, a lotus and water lily garden, a medicinal plant garden and collections of palms, heliconias and bromeliads. The collections are visited on foot.

Tips

Sources disagree on the entry fee: about 10 baht from 9am to 5pm, free before 9am and after 5pm, with a surcharge for cars; bring small change and check at the gate. The park is huge, flat and short on shade: come early and bring water, a hat and mosquito repellent. Hire a bike on site rather than doing it all on foot, or concentrate on the lake and the botanical garden. Further out than Lumphini, this is a half-day outing, not a break between two visits.
