Is it dangerous to go out in the evening?

The BTS running in the evening in Bangkok

Busy main streets, shopping centres, night markets and tourist areas are frequented late, so they feel fairly reassuring. The real risks for a visitor are theft (phones, bag snatching from a motorbike), spiked or tampered drinks, overcharging and disputes with drivers. Serious assaults on tourists are rare. Ordinary big-city caution is enough: walk on lit streets, avoid empty alleys and waste ground, and don't isolate yourself with a stranger.

Getting home alone: decide before you go out

The key point: know how you will get home before you start drinking. Note your hotel's address in Thai (name and map), charge your phone, install the ride-hailing app (Grab or Bolt) in advance and check that it works with your SIM or eSIM (see SIM and eSIM cards).

  • BTS and MRT: handy until their last train, which leaves around midnight depending on the station. Check the last train time for your line, as it varies. After that, you need a taxi.
  • Ride-hailing app: price shown, trip recorded, plate visible. Late at night or in the rain, cars can take a while to arrive: allow time, or walk to a bigger street.
  • Taxi: prefer an official metered taxi; say "meter, please". Photograph the plate or the ID inside, and send them to a friend for a late trip.
  • Tuk-tuk: agree the price before getting in; late at night they often quote unreasonable fares.
  • Motorbike taxi: fast but risky at night, especially after alcohol; a helmet is mandatory.

Drinks, bars and nightlife

Watch your glass: never leave it unattended and don't accept a drink from a stranger. Prefer bottles opened in front of you. The alcohol buckets in areas like Khao San Road are very strong. Beware of touts promising free entry, an upstairs room and an inflated bill; always ask the prices before ordering.

The rules on selling and drinking alcohol have changed in recent years: see alcohol in Bangkok. For places to go, see Bangkok at night and the rooftop bars.

Areas and streets: where to be alert

There is no "forbidden" area in the tourist zones, but night calls for attention:

  • Khao San and Banglamphu: very lively, but crowds attract pickpockets and touts.
  • Patpong, Nana, Soi Cowboy: nightlife bar areas; inflated bills, soliciting and theft are reported there. Stay with your group.
  • Chinatown (Yaowarat): safe while the crowd is there, but side alleys empty quickly after the stalls close.
  • Around parks (especially Lumphini): closed or poorly lit at night; avoid crossing them alone after closing.
  • Poorly lit lanes (soi): prefer the main roads; on the pavement, walk on the side away from the road to avoid motorbike snatch thefts.

Tips for solo women and solo travellers

Many women travel alone in Bangkok without problems. A few reflexes: share your location with someone, keep your phone charged, avoid being the last to leave a bar, use a ride-hailing app rather than hailing a taxi on the street, and don't get into a car whose plate doesn't match the app. LGBT travellers will find pointers in our Bangkok LGBT guide; the caution is the same as elsewhere. If you feel in danger, go into an open shop (convenience store, hotel, shopping centre) and ask for help.

Money, phone and papers

  • Take out only the cash you need; leave your passport at the hotel with a copy on you.
  • Keep your phone in an inside pocket; don't use it at the kerb.
  • Withdraw cash from ATMs inside a bank branch; see paying in Bangkok.
  • In case of theft, a report to the tourist police is useful for insurance.
