What the law says

The Equal Marriage Act came into force on 23 January 2025: same-sex couples can marry and have the same rights as other couples. Thailand does not, however, have a legal gender recognition law: trans people cannot change the sex marked on their papers. For a traveller this changes nothing about entering the country or staying in a hotel, but it is better to know. For the country's other rules, see our guide to rules and etiquette in Bangkok.
The neighbourhoods
The heart of gay nightlife is the Silom area, around Silom Soi 2 and Silom Soi 4, with bars, clubs and terraces open in the evening, and the neighbouring Patpong street for the night market. People come mostly in the evening and at night: see our guide to Silom and Sathorn. Other districts are not "gay districts" in the strict sense: there are bars and restaurants with a mixed clientele in Sukhumvit, see our guide to Sukhumvit, and in Siam. Most venues welcome everyone; etiquette is the same as anywhere, with respect and discretion in temples.
Bangkok Pride

Bangkok Pride is one of the big events of the year: a festival and march held in June, pride month. The 2026 edition was announced for 28 May to 1 June, the march generally being held on the last day. Dates and route change from year to year and those for 2027 were not published in October 2026: check the official announcements in spring. The parade goes through the city centre and the crowd is dense: bring water, a hat and patience, and go home by public transport rather than taxi. See also our calendar of major events in Bangkok.
Shows and cabarets
Bangkok's cabarets, often performed by transgender artists, are among the classic outings. Our guide to shows in Bangkok describes the venues, and our guide to nightlife the evenings. Prices and times vary: book with the venue or a reliable reseller.
Tips for going out
Alcohol law applies to everyone: shop sales from 11am to midnight, minimum age 20 (details in our guide to alcohol in Bangkok), and cannabis and drugs are strictly controlled (see cannabis in Bangkok). Be wary of invitations from people met on the street or on dating apps, of drinks offered that you did not see prepared, and of bars with inflated bills: see the scams in Bangkok. If you go home alone at night, our guide to safety at night in Bangkok gives pointers. Take travel insurance and know the emergency numbers: see our health in Bangkok guide.
A break during the day
For a break before the evening, the Silom area also has Lumphini Park and, since 2025, the Dusit Central Park complex. For safe travel, see our guide Grab or taxi in Bangkok.
