Pratunam and Ratchathewi at a glance
Pratunam ("water gate") takes its name from a former lock-dam on the Saen Saep canal, at the junction of Phetchaburi Road and Ratchaprarop Road. The Ratchathewi district extends further north, up to Victory Monument. In between, the area can be covered on foot, but it is hot and crowded: set out in the morning or late afternoon.
People come mostly for three things: buying clothes at wholesale prices, going up Baiyoke Tower for the view, and getting around (airport, canal boat, BTS). There are few monuments, but it is a real Bangkok neighbourhood, far from the temple circuit.
Shopping in Pratunam
The Platinum Fashion Mall is the best-known mall: several floors of small stalls, with a per-item price and a wholesale price from a few pieces. The neighbouring malls (Pratunam Center, Indra Square, Water Gate) and the street market between them complete the offer. The principle is the same everywhere: compare, bargain good-humouredly, pay in cash, and check the goods before leaving.
If you prefer more conventional malls, the Siam ones are a few BTS stops away: our page on the Siam shopping malls presents them.

Seeing the city from above: Baiyoke Sky
Baiyoke Tower II (304 metres, 85 floors) dominates the district. Its 77th-floor observation deck and 84th-floor revolving platform are described on our Baiyoke Sky page: ticket about 450 baht drink included, open 10:00 to 22:00 according to the hotel. Plan to go up an hour before sunset.
The quieter sights
- The Chao Mae Tuptim shrine, on Witthayu Road, on the edge of Pathumwan: a small place of worship dedicated to a tree spirit, with phallus-shaped offerings. Free, to be visited during the day and with respect.
- The Suan Pakkad Palace, Sri Ayudhya Road: eight Thai teak houses and a 17th-century lacquer pavilion. As of 1 October 2026 the museum is closed for repairs with no reopening date; check before you come.
- The Erawan Shrine, a little further south near Chit Lom: one of the busiest places of prayer in Bangkok.
- The Jim Thompson House, near the National Stadium: teak houses and art collections, a good alternative if Suan Pakkad is closed.
Victory Monument
At the northern end of the district, Victory Monument (Anusawari Chai Samoraphum), an obelisk surrounded by a large roundabout, was erected in 1941 to commemorate the Franco-Thai War. There is no visit as such, but it is the main transport hub of the north of the centre: a BTS station and many buses and minibuses. The lanes around it are known for "boat noodles" (kuaitiao ruea), served in small bowls.
Eating in Pratunam and Ratchathewi
The district suits street food: along Phetchaburi Road and in the lanes around the market, stalls of chicken rice, noodles, skewers and fruit set up from the morning until late at night. The malls' food courts (the Platinum's, at the top) are a simple, air-conditioned option. For more tips, see our guide to street food in Bangkok.

Getting around
- BTS: the Sukhumvit Line serves Chit Lom, Siam, Ratchathewi, Phaya Thai and Victory Monument.
- Airport Rail Link: Ratchaprarop and Phaya Thai stations connect the district to Suvarnabhumi Airport.
- Saen Saep canal boat: Pratunam pier is the main interchange; everything is explained in our guide to the Saen Saep canal boat.
- Taxi: handy for heavy shopping, but traffic is frequent around Pratunam; insist on the meter. See our transport in Bangkok guide.
Staying in Pratunam and Ratchathewi: who is it for?
The area suits travellers who want reasonable prices, direct access to the airport by the Airport Rail Link and to the BTS, and who do not mind crowds and noise. It suits less those looking for calm or lively evenings: nightlife is elsewhere, see our guide to Bangkok at night. To compare areas, read where to stay in Bangkok.
