Pattaya at a glance

The highlights

The Sanctuary of Truth

A building made entirely of carved wood, standing by the sea in Naklua, it blends Hindu deities, Buddhist figures and Southeast Asian motifs. Construction began in the 1980s and continues: you can see carvers at work. Allow two hours, clothing that covers shoulders and knees, and closed shoes. An evening visit is also offered; check its price at the ticket office. Our page covers the visit in detail: Sanctuary of Truth.

Nong Nooch tropical garden

About fifteen kilometres south of the city, this large botanical garden has themed gardens, topiaries, a "Dinosaur Valley" and shows of Thai dance and traditions. It normally opens from 8:00 to 18:00. The site is very large and has little shade: arrive at opening time with water and a hat. The "foreigner" ticket varies depending on whether you add the internal shuttle, the shows or lunch: read what is included. Details in Nong Nooch from Bangkok. The garden has an elephant show; if animal welfare matters to you, skip it.

Koh Larn island

Tawaen Beach on Koh Larn island

Koh Larn, about 7 km offshore, is the best reason to come to Pattaya for the beach: pale sand and clearer water than in the bay. The public ferry leaves from Bali Hai pier, at the end of Walking Street, and takes about 45 minutes to Na Ban; the announced fare is 40 baht since 10 April 2026, but another press article still mentions 30 baht: confirm at the ticket booth. Speedboats cross in 15 to 20 minutes and cost more. Beaches: Tawaen (the best equipped), Samae (wide, good for sunset), Nual (swimming and snorkelling), Tien (quieter). The last return leaves in the late afternoon: do not miss it. Avoid weekends and bring cash. To choose an organised trip, see Koh Larn from Bangkok: which tour.

Beaches and viewpoints

Pattaya and Jomtien beaches

Pattaya bay, its palm trees and towers

Pattaya beach, about 3 km along Beach Road, suits an evening stroll better than swimming: the water is busy with boats and jet skis. Jomtien, south of Pratumnak Hill, has a longer and calmer beach, with seafood restaurants and water sports. To the north, Wong Amat beach in Naklua is quieter and lined with hotels.

Viewpoints

Pratumnak Hill (Khao Phra Tamnak) has the big golden Buddha of Wat Phra Yai and a free viewpoint over the bay: the best overall view of the city, especially in the late afternoon.

Shows and evenings

Nong Nooch offers Thai dance shows during the day, and the Sanctuary of Truth a night visit. Pattaya also has a Muay Thai stadium that sells tickets to visitors. In the evening, Walking Street is a lively street mostly frequented by adults; we do not cover it here and advise checking menu prices before ordering.

Pattaya with children

Jomtien, Pratumnak Hill and Wong Amat are the calmest areas. Nong Nooch (gardens, dinosaurs) and Koh Larn appeal to children; bring sunscreen, water and shade breaks. See also Bangkok with children. To choose where to sleep, read where to stay in Pattaya by area.

When to go

The dry season, from November to February, is the most pleasant; from May to October, crossings to Koh Larn can be cancelled when the sea is rough. The coast's climate is close to the one described in the best time to visit Bangkok.
