What to do depending on your flight time

  • Before noon: plan nothing. Have breakfast at the hotel, then take a taxi or Grab (see Grab or taxi in Bangkok) or the first Airport Rail Link at 5:30.
  • Between noon and 16:00: a one-hour massage in the morning, then the train.
  • Between 16:00 and 20:00: a cooking class or massage in the morning, lunch, and leave around 14:00.
  • After 20:00: a full half-day, for example the route in Bangkok in one day. For the evening, see what to do tonight in Bangkok.

When to leave

Check-in counters generally open 3 hours before departure on international flights (Thai Airways states that check-in closes 40 minutes before); the exact times depend on the airline, so check your app. Working backwards for a 20:00 flight:

This margin is our advice for safety, not an official timetable. By road, add at least an hour at rush hour: the train is more reliable (details in Bangkok airports).

Where to leave your bags

At Suvarnabhumi, the left-luggage service (run by Bellugg, according to the airport's page) has a counter on level 2 of terminal 1, near the Tourist Police, and one on level 4, behind check-in row P. Airport rates: 100 THB (small bag), 150 THB (medium) or 200 THB (large) for 24 hours, then an extra charge per 12-hour period. Another page on the same site lists slightly different prices, so confirm at the counter. Show the receipt and an ID when you collect.

That means going to the airport with your bags before sightseeing, which only makes sense on a layover; see a layover in Bangkok. For a last day in the city, ask your hotel to hold your suitcases after check-out. We have not verified any official left-luggage service in the city, so do not rely on an unsourced rate.

Two activities under 4 hours

Massage

A one-hour massage fits almost anywhere. Salons and prices are covered in Thai massage in Bangkok. If you kept your room, a Wat Pho massage at your hotel lasts 2 hours, costs about $31 and is rated 4.7 out of 5 (72 reviews); book at least 4 hours ahead.

Cooking class

The Tingly Thai cooking class lasts about 3 hours, from around $39 to $40, rated 4.9 out of 5 (about 1,400 reviews). The market visit is only on the morning session. Plan to finish two hours before you leave for the airport. Schools are compared in Thai cooking classes in Bangkok.

Getting to the airport

The Airport Rail Link runs from 5:30 to midnight: 45 THB from Phaya Thai to Suvarnabhumi, with connections to the BTS and MRT (BTS or MRT in Bangkok). With three suitcases or children, a private transfer (from $32) saves you the stairs. For a night or very early flight, a hotel near the airport is an option: hotels near Suvarnabhumi.
