Doi Inthanon: the summit and the waterfalls

Doi Inthanon peaks at 2,565 metres: it is noticeably cooler than in the city, and twin pagodas, waterfalls and a mountain village line the road. The 9-hour group tour is the most booked; the private minivan costs from about $146 for two, useful for families. Details and choices in Doi Inthanon from Chiang Mai.

Elephants: an ethical sanctuary

Choose a sanctuary with no riding and no shows. The half-day feeding visit is the most affordable (about $26); the "sanctuary, waterfall and bamboo rafting" day is the most popular. See elephant sanctuaries in Chiang Mai.

Mae Kampong: the mountain village

Mae Kampong is a tea and coffee village at about 1,300 m and about 1 h 30 east of Chiang Mai according to the offers. You walk to a multi-tier waterfall and have lunch in a guesthouse; some packages include a night with a host family. In the rainy season (July to September), vehicles sometimes stop at the bottom of the village and a community shuttle (100 baht per person according to one offer) goes up. Wear good shoes: the paths are slippery.
