The White Temple at a glance

Wat Rong Khun is an all-white contemporary temple by the Thai artist Chalermchai Kositpipat, about fifteen kilometres from the centre of Chiang Rai. According to the sources checked in October 2026, the foreigner entry fee rose from 100 to 200 THB on 1 January 2026, including access to the Cave of Art; it is free for children under 120 cm and visitors aged 70 and over. Published opening hours differ between sources (roughly 8:00 to 17:30, last entry around 17:00): confirm them at the gate. Cover shoulders and knees, take your shoes off in the main building, and photograph outdoors only.

The road and a typical day

Chiang Mai is about three hours from Chiang Rai by bus (see our Bangkok to Chiang Rai guide). The listings announce close to four hours by minibus each way including stops. Expect an early start and an evening return: wear light but covering clothes, and bring water and something to do in the vehicle. Ask for hotel pick-up if the offer allows it, and check the pick-up zone.
