The City Pillar Shrine, San Lak Mueang in Thai, houses the guardian spirit of Bangkok. It stands at the corner of Lak Mueang and Sanam Chai roads, a short walk from the Grand Palace and Wat Pho. Entry is free and the shrine opens every day, but posted hours differ between sources (roughly 6:30am to 6pm, 6:30pm at the latest): in October 2026 no official hours could be confirmed, so plan to arrive before 5pm. Allow 20 to 30 minutes for the visit. According to tradition, King Rama I set the first pillar on 21 April 1782, when he moved his capital from Thonburi to Bangkok: the shrine was the first structure of the new city, before the palace itself.
Highlights

The shrine at night
The present building, with its tiered golden roof and white spire, dates from a 20th-century reconstruction. Lit up in the evening, it stands out against the neighbouring office blocks, a contrast that sums up Bangkok well.

The golden doors of the shrine
The wooden pillar itself is sheltered in a small pavilion behind tall doors with gilded decoration. You look at it from the threshold: worshippers leave lotus flowers, incense sticks and gold leaf.
A second pillar
The shrine holds two pillars, the one of Bangkok and the one that marked Thonburi, King Taksin's capital. It also has several other altars dedicated to guardian spirits of the city, where locals come to pray for protection and success.
The thank-you dancers
Visitors whose wish has been granted can hire a Thai dance troupe as a way of giving thanks. The scene, set to a small orchestra, can be watched in the courtyard, often in the morning.

Tips
Cover your shoulders and knees, and take off your shoes before entering the pavilion. The shrine is free; offerings (flowers, incense, gold leaf) are sold for a few dozen baht at the entrance, with no obligation. Keep your voice down: this is an active place of prayer, not a museum. The shrine is an easy stop before or after the Grand Palace, Wat Pho or Wat Mahathat, all within 15 minutes on foot.
How to get there
Lak Mueang Road, Phra Nakhon, Bangkok 10200, opposite the south-east corner of Sanam Luang. MRT Blue Line, Sanam Chai station (exit 1), about ten minutes on foot. Chao Phraya Express Boat to Tha Chang (N9) or Tha Tien (N8) pier, then a 15-minute walk.
