Taling Chan Floating Market (Khlong Lat Mayom) is the easiest water market to reach from central Bangkok: it is in Taling Chan district, on the Thonburi side west of the river, without the two-hour drive to the markets in the countryside. It opens on Saturdays and Sundays only. Less spectacular than Damnoen Saduak or Amphawa, it is mostly visited by Thai families coming for lunch: kitchen boats grill fish, prawns and skewers beside a small canal, and you eat sitting on landings above the water. It makes a good Sunday-morning outing, easy to combine with a boat trip on the Thonburi canals.
Highlights

The market canal
The stalls, covered with awnings and parasols, run along a narrow canal where boats pass each other. You walk on the wooden walkways beside the water; it is quieter and cooler than in the city centre.

The kitchen boats
Vendors in their boats cook Thai dishes to order: grilled seafood, noodle soups, papaya salads, coconut desserts. You order from the landing and eat on the spot.
Landings and tables on the water
You sit on wooden platforms at water level, feet above the canal: the mood is family-style and relaxed, far from the bustle of the more touristy markets.
The boat ride on the khlongs
From the market, motorboats leave for a tour of about an hour on the neighbouring canals, past stilt houses, orchards and temples. It is the short, inexpensive version of a visit to the Thonburi canals. The price is negotiated per person or per boat: agree it before boarding.
The plant and local-produce stalls
Around the kitchens, stands sell seasonal fruit, potted plants, coconut products and small craft items.

Tips
Arrive before noon, when the boats are still well stocked and the tables by the water are not all taken. Ask for the price by weight for grilled fish and prawns, which are the expensive part of the meal. Bring cash in small notes. Hours and boat-ride prices vary: check on the spot. Taling Chan Floating Market is much smaller than the ones in the countryside: do not expect the same sense of travel. For the big water markets, compare them in our guide to the floating markets near Bangkok; for the most famous floating market, see Damnoen Saduak.
How to get there
By taxi or ride-hailing app (Grab, Bolt) from central Bangkok, allow 30 to 45 minutes depending on traffic, longer at weekends around midday. City buses also run along Borommaratchachonnani Road nearby: check the route number and the stop before you go, as the journeys are long and hard for a visitor to read. The market is a few kilometres from the Southern Bus Terminal (Sai Tai Mai), which makes it easy to combine with the departure for Damnoen Saduak. Tell the driver "Talat Nam Taling Chan" (the floating market). Address: Khlong Lat Mayom, Taling Chan, Bangkok 10170.
