Which mode for which traveller

  • Short on days: fly. A Bangkok–Samui flight saves a whole day of transport.
  • Lowest price: night bus combined with the ferry, sold as a single ticket.
  • You like trains: sleeper berth to Surat Thani (Phun Phin station), then bus or minivan to the pier and ferry.
  • Family or lots of luggage: fly, or book a private transfer to the pier if you prefer the road.

Once on Koh Samui, the Ang Thong Marine Park speedboat day tour is the classic excursion.

By air

Bangkok Airways links Suvarnabhumi to Koh Samui airport in about 1 h 20; in October 2026 aggregators showed tickets from roughly 2,600 to 6,000 baht depending on the date. Domestic flights leave from Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang (mostly low-cost carriers): check the departure airport before planning your transfer. To reach the airport from the city, see our guide to Bangkok's airports.

A cheaper variant: fly to Surat Thani, then take a bus or minivan to a ferry pier. It only pays off if the price gap is clear, since it adds two connections.

By night train, then ferry

Night trains link Bangkok to Surat Thani (Phun Phin station, about fifteen kilometres from the town) in 9 to 12 hours depending on the train. They leave from Krung Thep Aphiwat (see our station guide); Hua Lamphong station no longer handles these long-distance services, to be confirmed with SRT (1690, thairailwayticket.com). Air-conditioned 2nd-class berths cost roughly 700 to 1,300 baht depending on the car and berth level (noted October 2026, to be verified). Book early for peak periods.

At Phun Phin, a shuttle included in a combined ticket (or a minivan) takes you to the Donsak or Ban Don pier, where ferries leave for Samui.

By bus or minivan with ferry

Combined "bus + ferry" tickets are sold by agencies, notably on Khao San, and by booking platforms. October 2026 listings show about 500 to 800 baht for a night bus with ferry; some packages from Khao San are longer and more expensive. The bus leaves in the evening, reaches Surat Thani or Donsak around 4 to 5 am, then the ferry crosses in about 1 h 30 (Raja Ferry's car ferry links Donsak to Lipa Noi). A transfer then drops you at your beach.

Lomprayah's fast ferries also serve Samui: mainly watch the waiting time between the bus and the boat.

Season and weather

The Gulf of Thailand has its own season: the sea is generally rougher from October to December, with crossings sometimes cancelled. If you travel late in the year, prefer the flight. For Bangkok's climate, see the best time to visit Bangkok.

Once there

You get around the island by songthaew, motorbike taxi or taxi (fares to negotiate). To stay connected on arrival, see our guide to the SIM card and eSIM. To sleep, compare hotels in Koh Samui around Chaweng, Lamai or Bophut.
