How to choose

  • Transport: without a scooter or car, pick an evening with a shuttle; ride-hailing costs more during the festival.
  • Number of lanterns: two to three per person depending on the offer.
  • Cancellation: several tickets cannot be refunded or changed; read the terms before paying.
  • Date: most evenings run on 24 and 25 November 2026 (full moon on the 24th). Dates and tickets are covered in our guide Yi Peng 2026: dates and tickets.
  • Resale prices: beware of tickets resold at two to three times their value for sold-out evenings.

Reminder: no free releases in the city

The same guide cites up to five years in prison and a 200,000 baht fine for an unauthorised release during the festival. The 2025 ban zone covered Mueang Chiang Mai and Hang Dong; the 2026 zone is not confirmed. For the story of the festival, the trip from Bangkok and the free option in town, see the Chiang Mai lantern festival from Bangkok.

FAQ

Which lantern evening should I choose in Chiang Mai? An evening with transport included, at about 2,400 to 3,900 baht, is the best compromise (October 2026 figures, to be checked).

How much does a lantern release cost? From 1,590 to about 6,000 baht at the entry level; higher categories go up to 15,900 baht.

Is CAD Khomloy sold out? A specialist guide reported it sold out for 2026 on 9 October; reconfirm with the organiser.

Can I cancel a ticket? Often not: at least one evening states "no cancellations"; read the terms.

Can I release a lantern without a ticket? Not in the banned zone during the festival. The free ceremonies in town (moat, Tha Phae Gate) have no sky lanterns.
