What is banned

The Patpong night market

The ban covers e-cigarettes, their refills and liquids and heated tobacco devices. It applies to import, possession and use, including for a passing visitor.

Penalties

  • Fines: the UK authorities generally cite 5,000 to 30,000 baht, with confiscation of the equipment.
  • Prison: the French ministry reminds travellers that the law provides up to 5 years for possession and up to 10 years for import.
  • Procedure: detention is possible, and an obligation to stay in Thailand until judgment may be added.

Ordinary tobacco

Ordinary cigarettes remain legal, but you may not import more than 200 per person: above that, customs can seize them and fine you ten times their value (UK advice). Smoking is banned in enclosed public places and many public spaces, with a fine of up to 5,000 baht.

Before you leave

  • Leave your vape, refills and liquids at home, and empty your hand luggage before boarding.
  • If you have a problem, contact the Tourist Police on 1155 (English-speaking) and your embassy; our guide to scams and safety lists the useful numbers.
